GAoH Sketchbook: Hushicho

Here's what artist Hushicho says about the groovy contribution above:
It's Sukia, with Gary on her right and Pompin (from that unfortunately disappointing Ratman book) on her left. I am a huge Sukia fan...what gay guy wouldn't enjoy the story of having a hot and sexy vampire chick as his hag? And poor Gary never really had much of a regular boyfriend, so I thought, well...why not just have Sukia, through some means, rescue Pompin from fumetti limbo for Gary? It's perfect, since superheroes are always coming back dramatically and for frivolous reasons. And what better boyfriend than an adventurer like Sukia and Gary? So I put little 'slave bracelets' as were popular in the 70s on Gary and Pompin, each with the initial of the other, and one on Sukia with a combined P and G. Aww. So cute. And then if you look behind Sukia, you can see that Gary's hand is actually not being well-behaved at all!
But I suppose it's only natural.
Many thanks to Hushicho! And check out his online comic, Incubus Tales.

(Here's the Sketchbook flickr set, and here's how to contribute, if you're so inclined!)

groovy stuff Hushicho. I've become a bit of a Sukia fan myself these days. Some fumetti are as reactionary as it gets (Wallenstein) but Sukia grooves all day and all of the nights.

Thanks, Headache! I stopped by tonight to read the updates and I happened to see a comment...I'm really glad you're turning on to Sukia!

Sukia always has a sort of tongue-in-cheek feel about it...there's always a kind of sense of humour about it, even if it's a very, very dark one. Many of the covers reflect this too, especially when they play off Gary's reactions to the situations. I really like that quality to it. Some fumetti can get downright miserable, and without a sense of humour it seems extremely bleak and depressing. Though sometimes Sukia can get like that, as of yet I haven't seen a story where there's not at least some humour, irony, or some redeemingly amusing quality about it.

I'm getting some new Sukia in the next couple of weeks, so I'm going to be sure to scan some of the best covers. My favourite bar none is the cover of Sukia 52, so I will definitely have to share it with you once it's in hand!

Thanks again for your kind comment!

Love the artwork! Great job! Speaking of Sukia, do you know where I can find complete interior scans of issues? Have you scanned full issues from your collection?

Alas, I do not know. I have found a few scans online, of various types, but most of my Sukia collection came directly from Italy! For some reason fumetti are woefully underscanned, and I think it's a real shame because while American comics are being archived and saved from being lost forever, fumetti are largely unscanned, at least in my experience.

You can typically find some scans on the rapidshare et al. places, but you really do have to search. Email me and I'll try to help you, but I think your best bet may be ebay. There's a seller named paperissima123 and she is fantastic. Although I'm used to dealing with postage from Japan, so speedy postage of heavy media from Italy isn't that shocking to me. It's not cheap, but it's not really too too terribly high.

But just write me and I'll see what I can do. It's really important to be able to look through things before you can be sure if you want to buy them or not, and especially technically antiques, and especially antiques in another language!
