I guess it's time for Blu-Ray.

My poor little cheapo dvd player, which has served me faithfully for a solid decade, has been degrading in performance lately, and now, as I'm halfway through the UFO megaset with Space: 1999 on deck, is doing so badly I'm just having to watch the discs on my computer.

As it happens, also, I just got a flat-screen tv for Christmas.

So maybe I should upgrade to Blu-Ray, already.

Would anyone recommend the PlayStation 3 as a suitable Blu-Ray (and also dvd, I take it?) player? Because I figure if I'm going to shell out anyway, I might as well get the gaming capacity too, if I can. I'm a little irked PS3 doesn't have some games I want (specifically: Onechanbara), but then Xbox-360 isn't Blu-Ray capable, is it? I'm really curious to try Arkham Asylum, and that F.E.A.R. 2 game looks pretty nifty. Do these games come with super-low-difficulty settings for gaming sub-retards like me?

Thanks in advance for all your sage advice!

The only downside I've noticed to using a PS3 for Blu-ray is its lack of an infrared port for universal remote action. (You gotta use the controller, but oh well.)

It is the Criterion Collection's official test player, though.

I dunno about FEAR, but Batman has been pretty easy even on the medium difficulty, thanks to the enemies dog like inability to look up. (Where the heck do they think Batman is going to come from?)

Haha, glad to see I am not the only one who can't seem to play even the easiest games on anything else but lowest level.

I bought a PS3 Slim about 4 months ago. I'm a fairly casual gamer these days so it only takes a few games to keep me happy. The main way I use my PS3 is to stream Hulu (via PlayOn), Netflix, and AVI files from my PC. It's been awesome for that. I've only watched a few Blu-Ray Discs but I assume that eventually I'll be using it more for that as well.

hey Curt

i bought my PS3 in October. I love it. One good reason to buy this player is that I read that it has advanced features that you would find in more expensive blu-ray players so if you buy the PS3 you're getting those advanced features by spending less for them. that's what i read. i don't know for sure which features those are but it was mentioned at Blu-ray.com which is a very reputable site. i suggest bookmarking that site, Curt. you'll find the latest annoucements for blu-ray and more.

Also if you hook up your computer to your PS3 with a ethernet cable, you can stream video files and music from the computer. There's a few programs for the computer that do that. I suggest getting Tversity (http://tversity.com/) and PS3 Media Server (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/). TVersity is good for streaming about anything but PS3 Media Server does that and stream MKV's which TVersity i don't think can do a good job of streaming. I've read on Tversity's forum lots of people asking about how to stream MKV's properly on that program but i never found a surefire solution on how on that board. So get both in case you have trouble with one program. And don't worry they're both free.

Regarding those games you mentioned, unfortunately i don't have any info for those. Though i did download a demo of Arkham Asylum a while ago but i haven't played it yet. Fear i haven't played either. But if you get stuck you could always go on youtube and look for video walkthoughs on a particular mission. that's what i do sometimes and it's better that way to see it visually than reading it on some written walkthrough ya know?

hope that helps. take care.

You can add my voice of PS3 approval to the choir. I got mine almost a year ago, and I don't regret it one bit. There are tonnes of games that cater to the casual gamer on the PS Network, and most games have a range of difficulties to choose from.

I've played the demo of Arkham, and it's superb. The voice cast from the 90s animated series all return to their roles and that alone is worth it.

You can invest in a remote, but all I do is press 'play', 'pause', and 'stop', which can all be done through a regular controller.

PS3 Media Server is a godsend, should your downloaded files not work via USB stick or whatever (which is rare), as it will transcode the media into a viewable medium, via your home network.

Your new TV will be a huge boon, too. I'm still stuck with a horrible old TV, which is not ideal.

The PS3 also plays DVDs, yes, but the one big downside I have with the PS3: DVD region coding. I'm Region 4, and Region 1s won't play on my PS3. There may be ways around this, but as my DVD player happily plays my imported discs, I don't mind too much.

Hope this helps!
