Hey, this actually looks do-able. I could drive up and back (about 4 hours each way) on Saturday--no plane fare or hotel expenses. Should I? Is it cool? Are any of you going?
I've been going for years. It's gotten too large for it's space. However, it's still a good time. Well worth it for a day. Though I might suggest coming up the night before and getting a cheap hotel on the outskirts of town so you get the full day at the con. If you do come up feel free to contact me for a drink while you are up here.
Hey there, Long time reader, first time poster. Anyways, I grew up near atlanta but moved to Los Angeles several years back. Between the east coast and west coast I have been to 8 different cons, several of which multiple times. But out of all of them(san diego comic con, AX, PMX, etc) Dragon Con is hands down the best. BUT the night life is a big part of that. So unless you plan to stay a night you are really missing out.
I'm volunteering at the Decatur Book Festival (also that weekend) on Saturday for a couple of hours. If you do decide to make DragonCon, drop me an email via the blog address, and I'll buy you a beer.
If you do end up going to dragoncon, please let us know and we can meet up! We are a couple of long time followers of your blog and have a lot of the same interests!

Have fun & drive safe!
